The first step is deciding what’s most important to you—are you all about luxury amenities, or do you just need a clean, comfy place to crash after a long day of exploring?

Think about your travel style. If you’re someone who loves to relax by the pool or enjoy room service, a resort or full-service hotel might be your best bet.

On the other hand, if you’re more about location and convenience, a boutique hotel or a well-rated budget option can keep you close to the action without breaking the bank and allow you to allocate the savings toward dining and experiences (more on planning here).

Location, Location, Location…

Location is everything, so take some time to research the neighborhood. Being close to attractions, restaurants, and public transportation can make your stay so much easier. If you’re in a new city, staying in a central area can help you explore more and waste less time commuting. If peace and quiet are your thing, a hotel slightly outside the city center might be more your speed. Also, don’t forget to check how far the hotel is from the airport or train station—nobody wants to deal with a two-hour transfer after a long flight.

Another key factor is reading the reviews. Sometimes, a hotel can look amazing in photos but feel completely different in person, and that’s where reviews come in handy. I tend to eliminate one-off reviews since those can be from one grumpy person, or extenuating circumstances – and rather look at the overall theme of the reviews as a whole. Reviews can give you insight into what’s really worth your money and what’s better left off your list.

Extras, Perks, and Niceties

Lastly, consider the little extras that might make your stay more enjoyable. Free breakfast, parking, a gym, golf and tennis, a view or balcony might be small perks that add up during your trip. Don’t hesitate to call the hotel directly for better rates or to ask about things like upgrades or early check-ins, especially if you’re arriving at an odd time. With a little research and consideration of your needs, you’ll be able to choose a hotel that perfectly complements your travel plans.
