We’ve probably all heard of the 5 P’s – Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance. Well if they apply anywhere they apply to travel! Traveling is such an exciting way to see the world, but making sure you’re properly-prepared, which includes packing important documents and travel essentials, can be the difference between a great time, and a nightmare. Here are five easy tips to get you ready for your next adventure.
- Do your homework! Learning about your destination before you go can make a huge difference, especially for international travel. Look at the weather to know what to expect and how to pack. Check out local customs and traditions to avoid any accidental faux pas. Don’t forget to look up the best attractions, hidden gems, and tasty spots to eat (more on choosing a great hotel here). While this can be time consuming, it is well worth the prep, but an even easier way to do this is to enlist the help of a great travel agent {Ahem} to save you time and do the research for you.
- Next, make sure your travel documents are prepared. Check your passport’s expiration date and get any visas you might need well ahead of time. Remember, generally speaking the expiration date on your passport should be at least 6 months away from the time of travel. It’s also smart to make copies of important documents like your passport, driver’s license, and travel insurance. Keep these copies separate from the originals, just in case. And while you’re at it, register with your country’s embassy – it’s an extra safety net if things go awry. - Think about your health and safety. Make a doctors appointment in advance to get any necessary vaccines and chat with a healthcare professional about any health concerns. Pack a basic first-aid kit with your prescription meds and emergency contacts. Don’t skimp on travel insurance either; it can cover you for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage. Be sure to read the fine print so you know what’s covered!
- Lastly, pack smart. Make a list tailored to your destination, the activities you have planned, and the weather. Bring versatile clothes that you can layer and use in different settings.
